The Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos) is perhaps best known for its habit of mimicking the songs of other birds and the sounds of insects and amphibians,. The Greek word polyglottos means multiple languages. The Mockingbird is the official state bird of the following states: Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, South Carolina (formerly), Tennessee, and Texas.

The Barred Owl (Strix varia) is best known as the hoot owl for its distinctive call. The adult is about 16 to 25 inches long with a 38 to 49 inch wingspan. The original artistic rendition was done as a colored scratchboard work. Scratchboard is typically a purely black and white medium. William Chesser developed special techniques to produce this unusual work of colored scratchboard art.
